Smithfield’s Buffalo Creek Greenway Connects More Than Parks |
Public recreation areas across JoCo give beginners and regular players places to get on the court |

Smithfield has a local trail that does much more than provide a place to exercise.
Buffalo Creek Greenway begins at Smithfield Community Park and runs nearly three miles toward the Neuse River and Smithfield Town Commons.
The paved path is about 10 feet wide and is designed for walkers, runners and cyclists.
Along the way, the greenway helps connect parks, schools, neighborhoods and Smithfield’s historic downtown area.
That makes it useful for residents who want recreation without feeling as though they are simply walking circles around a single park.
Smithfield Community Park gives families an easy starting point with recreation facilities nearby before they enter the trail.
At the other end, Town Commons brings visitors close to the Neuse River and downtown.
For a town the size of Smithfield, having this kind of connected outdoor corridor is a real community asset.
The trail includes bridges and boardwalk sections that add variety to the walk.
Local art along the route gives walkers another reason to slow down and pay attention.
Because the path is part of larger state and regional trail systems, a Smithfield walk can also feel connected to something much bigger.
But residents do not need to be serious hikers or cyclists to enjoy it.
A 30-minute walk, family bike ride or relaxed weekend stroll is enough to appreciate what the greenway offers.
Bring water and choose a distance that matches your group’s comfort level.
Families can pair the trail with playground time or a picnic at one of Smithfield’s nearby parks.
Runners can use the uninterrupted route for a longer workout without repeated street crossings.
If you have been driving past Smithfield’s parks without stopping, Buffalo Creek Greenway is a good reason to change that.
It is one of those local amenities that becomes more impressive once you actually get out of the car and experience it. |
