Downtown Smithfield is adding a little German flavor to fall on Saturday, October 10.
Smithfield Oktoberfest is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m., bringing together food, music, vendors and family activities for a free afternoon downtown.
The celebration is designed as a community event rather than just a food festival, with activities for adults and children and plenty of reasons to spend a few hours exploring Smithfield.
An Oompah Polka Band will provide the traditional soundtrack, helping create the kind of lively atmosphere associated with Oktoberfest celebrations while visitors sample food and browse participating vendors.
German-inspired food is part of the attraction, and a Bier Garden gives adults an Oktoberfest-style gathering place during the afternoon.
Food, beverages and vendor purchases should be budgeted separately even though admission to the festival itself is free.
Families have their own reasons to come downtown.
A Kids Zone is planned for younger visitors, making the event an option for parents who want a fall outing that offers something beyond shopping and dining.
The schedule also includes Bierlympics, adding some lighthearted competition to the afternoon.
Visitors do not have to stay for all four hours.
Families can stop by for lunch and music, while others may want to make an afternoon of it by browsing vendors and visiting Downtown Smithfield businesses before or after the festival.
October 10 is shaping up to be an especially active Saturday in Smithfield.
The town's final Signature Fresh Market of the 2026 season is also scheduled that morning from 8 a.m. until noon, creating an easy transition from morning shopping into the Oktoberfest celebration.
That combination gives residents a chance to spend much of the day downtown without needing a complicated itinerary.
Start with the market, grab lunch, listen to the band and explore Oktoberfest in the afternoon.
Downtown events can bring temporary parking or traffic changes, so visitors should check the latest event information before heading out.
Weather can also affect outdoor plans, particularly in October, so a last-minute forecast check is worthwhile.

Four hours leaves room to stop in without staying all afternoon.
The noon start works well after the fresh market. Trying to do both could mean several hours downtown. A parking update would be handy for anyone making a day of it.
Is there a separate schedule for the Bierlympics?
Oompah music certainly fits the occasion.
The Kids Zone makes this sound like more of a family outing. It would be useful to know which activities have age restrictions. Free admission helps, but food and shopping still need their own budget.
Morning market followed by Oktoberfest sounds like a full Saturday.
