Selma is getting ready to dance into Halloween, and local residents can join the fun. Activate Selma is organizing a community flash mob around Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” with practice sessions on Mondays & Tuesdays from 7:00 PM–8:00 PM (Sept. 28–Oct. 27) at 206 N. Raiford Street.

A Halloween tradition with a Selma twist

Few songs are more closely associated with Halloween than “Thriller.” Its memorable dance moves and playful spooky atmosphere make it a natural choice for a group performance. Rather than leaving the entertainment to professional performers, this project invites community members to learn the steps and take part in a shared activity.

Community participation is the heart of the idea. Rehearsals give neighbors a chance to meet, practice together, and build toward a performance families and friends can enjoy.

When and where to practice

Because the calendar and individual event notices can change, anyone interested in participating should check Activate Selma’s event calendar for the latest details before attending.

It is also worth asking the organizers whether newcomers can join after the first rehearsal, whether costumes are encouraged, and what participants should bring.

The event listing doesn't list an admission fee, age requirement, or registration deadline, so don't assume those details. Contacting the team directly is the safest way to find out.

Part of a busy Halloween season downtown

The flash mob fits into a broader lineup of seasonal activity in Selma.

The town’s Halloween Spooktacular is scheduled for Friday, October 30, with downtown trick-or-treating and other family-friendly attractions.

Those two references may describe different appearances or an updated plan. For that reason, residents should verify the final public performance schedule rather than assume the rehearsals or the October 30 festivities are the main show.

Even residents who do not dance have a reason to follow downtown Selma’s October calendar. Local businesses, volunteers, and families all contribute to the festive atmosphere that makes community events memorable.

How to get involved

Activate Selma is a volunteer-driven organization made up of residents, business owners, and community supporters. Its projects bring people together and encourage activity in the town’s historic downtown district.

To learn the choreography, visit the organization’s Get Involved page and look for the 2026 FLASH MOB – Thriller team. If you would rather watch, follow the events calendar for the confirmed performance location and time.

The most important first step is simple: check the official listing, confirm the rehearsal details and see whether the team is still welcoming dancers. You do not have to be a professional performer to be interested in a community dance project.
