Smithfield is abuzz with excitement as the annual scholarship pageant returns, focused on creating unique opportunities for local high school students.
This year, the event is dedicated specifically to female students living in Johnston County, inviting them to compete for a suite of high school scholarships designed to reward talent, individuality, and leadership.
The spirit behind the pageant draws inspiration from the legendary Ava Gardner, a Johnston County native whose legacy endures in downtown Smithfield.
Those who apply by Sept. 30 will receive one complimentary ticket to the Ava Gardner Festival Gala scheduled for Friday, Oct. 2.
The final application deadline is Oct. 5, and participation will be limited to a maximum of 20 contestants.
Mandatory pre-competition meetings are scheduled for Monday, Oct. 12, and Friday, Oct. 23.
The pageant will be held Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Neuse Little Theatre in Smithfield.
The event is not just about appearances—it asks contestants to present themselves through personal essays, demonstrate confidence on the runway, and impress a panel with thoughtful, articulate answers during interviews.
A standout category is the "Sense of Self" runway, where formal gowns are traded for outfits that express the wearer's real personality, underlining how this pageant stands apart from national conventional competitions.
Talent showcases and professional-style interviews give participants the chance to deepen communication skills and broaden their aspirations.
The Essence of Ava Scholarship, the festival’s premier award, grants a $1,000 prize and the coveted Miss Downtown Smithfield title.
Additional scholarships cater to students who display remarkable originality and a strong sense of community.
Parents and school officials say this event boosts confidence among young women and sets a new local standard for what pageants can be. |
