Literary Journal Submissions in Johnston County NC |
Including short story submissions and historical journal entries |

Writers with ties to Johnston County have a unique chance to see their work recognized this year.
The call for literary journal submissions has opened, bringing fresh excitement to the local creative community.
This project extends beyond fiction—essays, poems, and even historical journal entries are also welcome, as long as they connect in some way to the people or places of Johnston County.
The Johnston County Heritage Center is organizing its third Literary and Historical Journal, set to appear later in the year and highlighting voices both established and emerging in the region.
Recent expansions of the downtown Smithfield arts scene have set the stage for a new era of local storytelling, making this publication especially timely for those eager to showcase their perspectives.
Submissions will be accepted electronically beginning in mid-September 15th, with a deadline of October 30th.
Both adult and junior writers—especially high school students—are encouraged to participate, fostering creativity across generations.
Candidates outside Johnston County are still welcome, but each entry must be meaningfully connected to local places, events, or individuals.
The Cynthia DeFord Adams Literary Fund supports this initiative, honoring the beloved teacher and published poet.
Community leaders believe these short story submissions and essays could capture the county's rapidly evolving spirit, given recent redevelopment projects near downtown and the influx of new residents.
Writers interested in learning more about the guidelines should contact the Heritage Center via email at heritagecenter@johnstonnc.gov
With Johnston County’s story quickly shifting, each literary voice offers both a celebration and record of local life. |
