Fall creativity takes over Benson’s Main Street

Benson invites neighbors, families, and businesses to join its Main Street Scarecrow Contest, an autumn activity that spotlights handmade creations.

The Benson Area Chamber of Commerce flyer invites everyone to build an original scarecrow for display along Main Street between Benson Square and Benson’s Singing Grove.

Dates to know

Registration began October 1. Scarecrows will be displayed October 17–19, with judging on October 20. Those who wish to participate should register at the Benson Area Chamber of Commerce office and pick up the contest rules when they register.

The contest is open to everyone. That means residents can get creative with the classic straw-hat look, try an unexpected character, or work together on a group design. Entrants should follow the official rules for displaying their scarecrows.

Five chances for recognition

First prize is $125, second prize is $100, and third prize is $75. An honorable mention receives $50, and the People’s Choice Award is $25.

The People’s Choice prize adds an extra bit of fun for the community, though the flyer doesn't say how voting will work. Check with the Chamber for instructions before assuming how to cast a vote.

A seasonal stroll through downtown

You do not have to enter the contest to enjoy it. Once the scarecrows are displayed, downtown visitors can walk Main Street, admire the different designs, and take in the festive atmosphere.

Some entries may be funny; others may be traditional, colorful or surprising. The appeal is seeing how many different ideas neighbors can bring to one familiar fall symbol.

The location between Benson Square and Benson’s Singing Grove also makes this a natural addition to a downtown outing. Consider making time for a local shop or restaurant while viewing the entries.

For families, making a scarecrow can be a shared project. Choosing clothing, planning a character and putting the pieces together offers an easy way to participate in a local celebration.

Businesses and civic groups can also take part in the spirit of the contest, subject to the official registration information from the Chamber. The event is an opportunity to show creativity while helping make downtown inviting for visitors.

How to take part

The Chamber flyer directs participants to register at the Benson Area Chamber of Commerce office and collect the contest rules there. It does not list an entry fee, so confirm requirements directly before building or installing an entry.

For information about the organizer and local events, visit the Benson Area Chamber of Commerce website. You can also find directions to Main Street in Benson before planning your visit.

Whether you build a scarecrow or simply enjoy the display, Benson’s Main Street Scarecrow Contest is a cheerful way to celebrate October and the imagination of the community.
