Johnston County diners have two weeks to discover new favorites and revisit old ones.

JoCo Restaurant Week runs October 25 through November 7, 2026, and expands beyond Smithfield to celebrate independently owned restaurants throughout Johnston County.

That makes it a timely reason for Clayton residents to explore local dining in their own community and nearby towns.

The event introduces diners to participating businesses through special menu items, exclusive offers, and other restaurnt experiences.

Specific deals and participating locations may vary, so diners should check the official event website before making plans.

From Smithfield to a countywide celebration

According to the Johnston County Visitors Bureau, the idea began in Smithfield in fall 2025, when resident Krystee Vernet organized a restaurant week featuring a dozen locally owned establishments.

Those restaurants introduced special deals, drinks, dishes, and experiences that gave customers an extra reason to dine locally.

For 2026, Vernet has teamed up with Felicia Baxter to bring the concept to the wider county.

The expansion reflects a simple idea: Johnston County's food scene extents far beyond one downtown, and each community has its own places worth discovering.

For diners, that could mean making a short trip to try a restaurant they have heard about but never visited.

For restaurant owners, it offers an opportunity to introduce their cooking and hospitality to new customers.

Why it matters for Clayton

Clayton's growth has brought new residents and dining options, but finding a favorite neighborhood restaurant still often comes down to friends' recommendations.

Restaurant Week gives residents another way to learn what's available locally while also discovering the independent dining spots in Smithfield, Selma, Benson, and elsewhere in Johnston County.

It's also a reminder that spending money with local businesses helps sustain the restaurants that give each town its character.

Make a meal of it

Restaurant Week doesn't have to mean an elaborate night out.

It can be a casual lunch with a friend, a family dinner, a date night, or a chance to try a new dish.

One way to enjoy the event is to pick a restaurant you already love, then choose another you've been meaning to visit.

Before heading out, check whether the restaurant has announced a Restaurant Week offer, which days the special is available, and whether reservations are recommended.

Because this is a countywide promotion, participating locations and their menus may vary.

A boost for local restaurants

Independent restaurants are often more than places to eat.

They are meeting spots for families, gathering places for friends, and businesses that contribute to the feel of a downtown or neighborhood.

Organizers hope the promotion will encourage residents to explore beyond their usual routines and help restaurants reach customers who might otherwise pass them by.

In the long run, an event like this can turn a one-time visit into a new weekly tradition.
