Johnston Community College Moving Ahead With Major Campus Improvements |
Projects will expand and renovate public-safety and healthcare training facilities on its main campus |

Johnston Community College is moving forward with three major campus improvement projects funded by the $30 million bond referendum approved by Johnston County voters in 2024. The largest investment—about $23 million—will expand JCC’s Public Safety training facilities. Plans include a new 600-by-600-foot driver training pad for emergency vehicle and scenario-based training, expanded parking, a new apparatus and classroom building, and a three-story training structure for realistic emergency-response exercises. Another $4.5 million will fund renovations and a new front addition to the Elsee Building, home to the college’s Nurse Aide and other programs. Completion is expected by December 2026. Approximately $2.5 million will renovate the Britt Building, allowing JCC’s growing Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology program to expand while creating additional space for Emergency Medical Services and a new Respiratory Therapy program. JCC President Dr. Vern L. Lindquist said the improvements will help the college keep pace with Johnston County’s growth and workforce needs. The expansion comes as JCC reports its student enrollment has increased 72 percent over the past five years, bringing approximately $42 million in additional state funding to the college. |
